Volunteers Needed for Publication and Mentoring Initiatives

Publication Program
The DPC SIG is looking for volunteers to assist in the development of booklets specific to our Industry. The idea behind this initiative is to translate into practical guides the best examples of project management as it applies to four Construction Sectors (Airport, Industrial Business Park, Highway & Railway, Residential). The first publication is about Project Management applied to the Residential Sector with specific focus on "Green" issues and innovation. It will be issued as a draft to a Panel of Expert at the end of this year and it will be presented to the SIG community on 16th of February 2009 with a webinar that will be free to our members.

Your support and contribution is critical in providing input and in delivering a useful working tool for our Professional Community. The only criteria for volunteering is your enthusiasm for project management and the Construction Sector. Please note the call for volunteers for this first publication will close on 10th of November.

If you are willing to contribute to the publications or just curious about this initiative please contact our Deputy First Vice Chair Fabrizio Rossi at deputyfirstvicechair@dpcsig.org.

Note: we experienced a technical problem with the email provided above and you may have received an error message when applied. We do apologize for the inconvenience and we warmly invite to re-express your interest in this initiative.

Mentoring Program
The DPC SIG is also looking for volunteers to assist in the development of a mentoring program for our members. Please contact Judy Wilks at vcmembership@dpcsig.org.

Project Management War Stories

Risk Management: Why opponents to the project are your most important external stakeholders

Understanding who your stakeholders are and how they directly or indirectly impact a project plan requires planning that will ensure the best communication and risk management strategy facilitating the navigation of the bumps project managers will face along the road. Good project managers understand that disparate groups of stakeholders need to be best aligned together to create a powerful coalition of support. More importantly, carefully managing the risk of your opponents that are often part of this equation must be diligently monitored in order to maintain stakeholder alignment. As the expression goes - "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

In this episode, we look at the relationship between stakeholder and risk management by examining the story of the Fiddler on the Roof, Cape Wind (Cape Wind opponents), and a mining project in South America.

On Fire Leadership: Managing Projects Using Conflict Management and Emotional Intelligence featuring Dave Gerber, acclaimed project management author, trainer, and consultant. Some leaders are ON FIRE! You can just see it in their eyes, their approach and in their actions. They come to work with a spark that sets the standard; the tone for the day, or the project and we wonder, “…where do they get that energy and ability?” Maybe they just love their work? It’s more than that – that spark appears when high level skill meets passion. To be an “On Fire” leader, one must navigate through seemingly endless project conflicts that will require inspiring leadership, sound negotiation skills and the application of a heightened level of emotional intelligence. Understanding how to better manage projects by using conflict will empower participants to approach both work and relationships differently.
